LAU School of Pharmacy Faculty Recognized Among the World’s Most-Cited Scientists

Associate Professor Mohammed Mehanna of the LAU School of Pharmacy has been recognized among the world’s top two percent most-cited scientists in the 2025 Scopus Elsevier list, highlighting his influence in pharmaceutical research and innovation.

Dr. Mehanna joined LAU in 2023, bringing extensive experience in drug delivery and pharmaceutical nanotechnology. His scholarly work explores biological barriers that block drugs from reaching their targets, anticancer theranostics (therapy and diagnostics) that both detect and treat cancer, non-invasive drug delivery without injections, nano-carriers that transport medicines directly to cells, and mathematical methods to design and test these systems for safety and effectiveness.

Dr. Mehanna’s research seeks to develop new ways to deliver drugs more effectively, safely, and precisely, using cutting-edge nanotechnology. His contributions to the field are informed by a career that includes leadership as chair of the Industrial Pharmacy Department at Alexandria University, Egypt, and advanced studies at the University of Alexandria, where he completed his MS and PhD focused on modern dosage forms and nanotechnological carriers.

Through his innovative research, Dr. Mehanna exemplifies LAU’s commitment to high-impact, globally recognized scholarship that addresses real-world healthcare challenges.

Commenting on Dr. Mehanna’s achievement, Dean Naser Z. Alsharif said that “his inclusion among the world’s top two percent most-cited scientists reflects not only his outstanding contributions to advancing safer and more effective therapies but also the School of Pharmacy’s commitment to fostering world-class research that is impactful and improves health outcomes locally and globally.”

Dr. Mehanna is among the 28 full-time faculty who were included in the list, up from 17 in 2023 and 25 in 2024, representing 6.5 percent of LAU’s full-time faculty.
